Lactose Intolerance

information from the National Institutes of Health

Lactose intolerance, also called lactase deficiency, means you aren't able to fully digest the milk sugar (lactose) in dairy products. A deficiency of lactase — an enzyme produced by the lining of your small intestine — is usually responsible for lactose intolerance.

There is no treatment for lactose intolerance. There's currently no way to boost your body's production of the lactase enzyme. People with lactose intolerance usually find relief by reducing the consumption of products containing lactose and using special products made for people with this condition.

This no-lactose food database is a convenient tools to identify foods without lactose.

For lactose content of common foods see: Lactose Counter.

How to Know if You Have Lactose Intolerance

To find out if you have lactose intolerance, your doctor will ask about your symptoms. The doctor may ask you to stop eating or drinking milk and milk products to see if your symptoms improve.

Your doctor might perform other tests to confirm your diagnosis:

  • Breath tests: You will drink a sweet drink with lactose in it. Then your breath is tested to see if you were able to digest the lactose.
  • Stool test: Your stool can be tested to see if you digest lactose. The stool test is often used to check babies for lactose intolerance.
