Low-Potassium and Low-Phosphorus Food Finder App

This web app allows you to find foods having the potassium and phosphorus contents below your specified max-potassium and max-phosphorus limits.
You can set the maximum potassium and phosphorus contents in milligrams per 100 grams of food weight and the database displays only the foods that satisfy both of these specifications.

  • Max potassium values are from 0 to 16500 (milligrams).
  • Max phosphorus values are from 0 to 9918 (milligrams).
Note: Use whole numbers only.

Low-Potassium Low-Phosphorus Hemodialysis Diet

Potassium-rich foods are restricted for those on hemodialysis because potassium builds up between dialysis treatments and can cause problems such as weakness, muscle cramps, tiredness, irregular heartbeat and even heart attack.

Normal blood levels of potassium help keep your heart beating steadily. However, too much potassium can build up when the kidneys no longer function well. Dangerous heart rhythms may result, which can lead to death.

Foods high in phosphorus are restricted for those with chronic kidney disease because hemodialysis removes only a small amount of phosphorus from the blood. Unless the amount of phosphorus in the diet is limited, and phosphorus-binder medications are taken regularly, phosphorus levels can get too high. This can increase the risk of developing complications such as itching, weak and brittle bones and calcium deposits in blood vessels and organs including the heart and lungs.

Healthy kidneys help regulate the level of phosphorus in your blood by removing extra phosphorus. If your kidneys aren't working properly, eventually you'll probably have high phosphorus levels in your blood (hyperphosphatemia). Too much phosphorus decreases the level of calcium in your blood, which can lead to bone disease.
