About How To Gain Weight Food Database

This database helps you find healthful, nutritious foods to gain weight.
Common foods omitted from this database are those having

  • less than 20 calories per 100 grams of food weight or
  • more than 80 grams of fat per 100 grams of food weight.

Weight Gain Index (WGI)

Assuming it takes 3,500 calories to gain 1 pound of body weight, we have calculated the weight gain in pound if you consume one pound of a food. This is the food's weight gain index.
This index provides an additional perspective for you to look at foods and evaluate their caloric contents.
The unit of weight (oz, lb or kg) doesn't matter, so long as you use the same type for both food consumed and weight gain expectation.

Examples:

  • Look at the first entry in our grid above: The WGI of blue cheese is 0.5. This means if you consume 1 lb of blue cheese, you gain 0.5 lb of body weight. Or, similarly, an ounce of blue cheese gives you half an ounce of weight gain. For metric users, one kg of blue cheese eaten means 0.5 kg of weight gain.
  • Now click on the column header WGI (or Calories) to sort all the WGI values in our database in descending order. The macadamia nuts show up at the top and they all have 0.9 WGI. This means one pound of macadamia nuts eaten should make you weigh 0.9 pound heavier! These nuts are the most fattening of foods or most helpful for weight gain.

As you see, using our Weight Gain Index is a convenient way to evaluate and remember caloric content of foods.

Food Sources for Weight Gain

Pound for pound, or ounce for ounce, the following foods should help you gain the most weight.
Please note that we do not recommend eating a restricted selection of foods to gain weight fast. A nutritious menu for weight gain should be balanced and varied. With this database, we are providing a tool for you to make the best food choices for your weight goal.
