Cholesterol in Diet
Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance that occurs naturally in all parts of
the body. Your body needs some cholesterol to work properly. But if you have too
much in your blood, it can stick to the walls of your arteries. This is called plaque.
Plaque can narrow your arteries or even block them.
High levels of cholesterol in the blood can increase your risk of heart disease.
Your cholesterol levels tend to rise as you get older. There are usually no signs
or symptoms that you have high blood cholesterol, but it can be detected with a
blood test. You are likely to have high cholesterol if members of your family have
it, if you are overweight or if you eat a lot of fatty foods.
You can lower your cholesterol by exercising more and eating more fruits and vegetables.
You also may need to take medicine to lower your cholesterol.
What is high blood cholesterol?
Too much cholesterol in your blood is called high blood cholesterol. It can be serious.
People with high blood cholesterol have a greater chance of getting heart disease.
High blood cholesterol does not cause symptoms, so you may not be aware that your
cholesterol level is too high.
High Blood Cholesterol Treatment
The main goal of cholesterol-lowering treatment is to lower your low-density lipoprotein
(LDL) or bad cholesterol level enough to reduce your chances of having a heart attack
or developing a disease caused by narrowing of the arteries.
There are two main ways to lower your cholesterol -- through Therapeutic Lifestyle
Changes (TLC) and with medicines.

What is LDL cholesterol?
LDL stands for low-density lipoproteins. (Lipoproteins are molecules that carry
cholesterol through your bloodstream.) LDL cholesterol is sometimes called bad cholesterol
because it can build up in the walls of your arteries and make them narrower. This
buildup of cholesterol is called plaque. Over time, plaque can build up so much
that it narrows your arteries. This is called atherosclerosis or hardening of the
arteries.
The higher the level of LDL cholesterol in your blood, the greater your chances
of getting heart disease.
What is HDL cholesterol?
HDL stands for high-density lipoproteins. (Lipoproteins are molecules that carry
cholesterol through your bloodstream.) HDL cholesterol is sometimes called good
cholesterol because it helps remove cholesterol from your artery walls and carries
it to your liver. The liver then removes the cholesterol from your body.
The higher your HDL cholesterol level, the lower your chances of getting heart disease.
