Betaine

Betaine, also called betaine anhydrous or trimethylglycine (TMG), is a substance that's made in the body, where it's involved in liver function, cellular reproduction, and helping make carnitine. It also helps the body metabolize homocysteine, an amino acid.

Betaine is used to treat homocystinuria (an inherited condition in which the body cannot break down a certain protein, causing build-up of homocysteine in the blood). Increased amounts of homocysteine in the body can cause symptoms such as extreme tiredness, seizures, dislocation of the lens of the eye, abnormal bone structure, osteoporosis (weak bones), blood clots, or decreased weight or rate of weight gain and slowed development in children. Betaine is in a class of medications called nutrients. It works by decreasing the amount of homocysteine in the blood.

Betaine, a choline derivative, is important because of its role in the donation of methyl groups to homocysteine to form methionine.

Betaine hydrochloride

Betaine hydrochloride is a supplement that's sometimes recommended for increasing stomach acids, which might help in treating a wide range of health conditions. You could take betaine hydrochloride to help treat asthma, allergies, arthritis or digestive problems.

Choline and Betaine Intake and the Risk of Colorectal Cancer in Men

Dietary choline and betaine have been hypothesized to decrease the risk of cancer because of their role as methyl donors in the one-carbon metabolism. However, it remains unknown whether dietary intake of choline and betaine is associated with colorectal cancer risk. But study by Lee, et al. of Channing Laboratory, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, found no association between choline and betaine intake and colorectal cancer risk in men.

Betaine in Human Nutrition

Betaine is an important human nutrient obtained from the diet from a variety of foods. It is rapidly absorbed and utilized as an osmolyte and source of methyl groups and thereby helps to maintain liver, heart, and kidney health. The growing body of evidence shows that betaine is an important nutrient for the prevention of chronic disease.

According to study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, betaine has been shown to protect internal organs, improve vascular risk factors, and enhance performance.
