Amino Acids

Amino acids are organic compounds that combine to form proteins. Amino acids and proteins are the building blocks of life. When proteins are digested, amino acids are left. The human body needs a number of amino acids to break down food. Amino acids need to be eaten in large enough amounts for optimal health.

Amino acids are classified into three groups:

  • Essential: Essential amino acids cannot be made by the body, and must be supplied by food.
The nine essential amino acids are: histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan, and valine.
  • Nonessential: Nonessential amino acids are made by the body from essential amino acids or in the normal breakdown of proteins.
They include: alanine, asparagine, aspartic acid, and glutamic acid.
  • Conditional: Conditional amino acids are usually not essential, except in times of illness and stress.
They include: arginine, cysteine, glutamine, tyrosine, glycine, ornithine, proline, and serine.

Aspartic Acid

information from the National Institutes of Health

Aspartic acid, also called asparaginic acid, is one of the nonessential amino acids. "Nonessential" means that our bodies produce it even if we don't get this amino acid from the food we eat.

Aspartic acid is one of two acidic amino acids. Aspartic acid and glutamic acid play important roles as general acids in enzyme active centers, as well as in maintaining the solubility and ionic character of proteins.

Aspartic acid helps every cell in the body work. It plays a role in:

  • Hormone production and release
  • Normal nervous system function
Plant sources of aspartic acid include:
  • Legumes such as soybeans, garbanzo beans, and lentils
  • Peanuts, almonds, walnuts, and flaxseeds
Animal sources include:
  • Beef
  • Eggs
  • Salmon
  • Shrimp

Canavan Disease and Aspartic Acid

Canavan disease is an inherited condition that affects the breakdown and metabolism of aspartic acid. Canavan disease is inherited through families. It is more common among Ashkenazi Jews than in the general population. The lack of the enzyme, aspartoacylase, leads to a buildup of material called N-acetylaspartic acid in the brain. This causes the white matter of the brain to break down.
